Alice Downer

Alice Downer, 95, passed away on Wednesday May 21st. She was a lifetime member of the Carson City Democratic Women’s Club. Many Carson City women will remember her dramatic performance at the 1998 CCDWC’s Spring Tea and Fashion Show. Alice portrayed a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in 1912 rural Nevada being read her contract by the chairman of the school board. The contract included rules teachers had to follow such as not wearing "bright colors" or using face "paint." It also forbade teachers to get married. In 2001 the Nevada Women's History Project and Nevada Women's Fund selected Alice as a Woman of Achievement. Memorial services will be at 11am Thursday, May 29, at Walton's Chapel of the Valley in Carson City. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Andean Tapir Fund, P.O. Box 456, Minden, NV 89423-0456. (Record-Courier 4/4/98; RGJ 5/27/08).
